Dalkeith Estate

You are more than welcome to bring along your dog/s, all that we ask is that you keep your dog on a leash in the main areas ie, playground, cafe area and recreational areas.  If your dog is well behaved, there are plenty woodland walks and river banks to have a stroll round.

You can get to grips with some of the fascinating bits of the Estate with one of our Ranger Led Walks.

The Dalkeith Estate is bounded by a wall, first built by Charles I, but later extended and raised by Napoleonic Prisoners of War. The wall enclosed about 850 acres of farmland and woodland. There is a horse livery within the Estate and about 100 horses are stabled there. The Farm also breeds Simmental cattle and raises some crops.

We keep a few rare breeds of cattle, sheep & pigs and you can get up close and personal with a Gloucester Old Spot or pat a Wensleydale or maybe watch the shearing in the summer, there is always something going on!

The woodlands are carefully forested for hardwood timber for furniture makers (specialising in Oak) but also produce firewood, woodchip bio fuel and charcoal. The old buildings on the Estate are used for a variety of purposes from offices to a restaurant.

Being an island of green in a peri-urban situation. The Estate is home to a huge variety of animals and birds. Deer, foxes, badgers and buzzards can be seen, by even the most inexperienced nature watcher.

If your pleasure is walking or cycling, strenuous or relaxed, Dalkeith offers the space to do it.

We have a large adventure play area, made out of wood from the forests of the Estate, where kids can have a whole days entertainment, while adults can just chill out with a coffee at our Stable Bistro.
