Autumn Update 2010
After a hectic summer with groups and visitors aplenty, the Park is slowly changing it's theme to Autumn.
As Autumn comes, the leaves will change on the trees, changing the whole coulour scheme of the Estate into golden hues and vibrant reds. Our large horse chestnut tree at the main gate is abundant with conkers, our oaks are full of acorns and the hazel trees are brimming with hazelnuts.
This is also a good time of year to gather any berries for those who like to make jam or wine! Brambles, rosehips, rasps and sloes are all starting to ripen. Dalkeith Estate is famed for its varieties of Fungi - But pick wisely, as you really have to know your stuff before attempting to harvest.
Winter birds will start to return to the Estate. Redwings and fieldfares, two members of the thrush family, make the long journey back after nesting in Scandanavia. You will also spot young pheasants in our woodland, these have just left the rearing pens, so PLEASE keep your dog/s under control in these areas.
In preperation for hibernation, and the cold winter months ahead, hedgehogs are feeding on small insects, slugs, worms and beetles to gain weight prior to their long winter sleep. Its a good idea to check all bonfires in your garden before lighting - they make great hibernation spots for these animals in the winter.
Dalkeith Estate is at it's most beautiful in the Autumn - colourful, crisp and healthy!
