Palace Ground Restoration
Clearing work has progressed well on this important project at the grounds adjacent to Dalkeith Palace. The area is now beginning to replicate the 1830's idea of wide, dramatic vistas and lawned terracing.
Work started at the end of July, clearing the Butterfly Meadow of tree stumps along with the removal of vast amounts of earth to open up the views towards Montagu Bridge and the "Dukes Seat". Teams from Buccleuch Estates, Dalkeith staff and Contractors endured wet and often windy weather to keep this project on schedule.
The site was levelled, terracing established and the whole area re-seeded, which is starting to show through already, giving a rough idea of the lush, green lawns we hope to see in late spring next year. This will provide us with an excellent venue for larger events and a whole new look to the Estate.
Next on the agenda is to augment the vista from the Palace towards St Mary's Church and surrounding woodland. All part of the great Dalkeith Estate Renaissance - a new interest of the Buccleuch Family.
